A Maine urban garden diary |

I’m really happy with the sidewalk garden this year - and so are the bees and butterflies! I love the pop of color and dramatic look of the amaranth. The sunflowers have been amazing and it fills me with such joy when I see how many birds are enjoying their seeds. The mouse garlic I planted last fall has flourished and the bee balm, wormwood, lavender, Joe Pye weed, echinacea and dill are all doing great. The mountain mint has been too shaded but I think it will really take off next year once I weed out some lilys and Jerusalem artichokes. The jury is still out on whether the peach tree will thrive and keeping the grass at bay is still a battle. I need to just keep planting, find some good ground covers and mulch mulch mulch! In the past few weeks I’ve scavenged some yarrow, aster, and narrow leaf mountain mint from roadsides and public gardens, and I got a swamp milkweed from a neighbor so fingers crossed they take root!
